In the business of fitness successes!

Is it better to plan and tweak or not to plan?

Every week, I’ve been laying out my upcoming week’s workout plan… last week was no different. In last week’s post, I stated that my workouts were going to be something like this:

  • Monday August 25: P90X3 Accelerator
  • Tuesday August 26: Les Mills Pump, Pump & Burn
  • Wednesday August 27: P90X3 Triometrics
  • Thursday August 28: Focus T25 with Sam
  • Friday August 29: P90X3 Yoga
  • Saturday August 30: Les Mills Pump, Pump & Shred
  • Sunday August 31: Focus T25 with Sam

Well, now that the week has come and gone, let me tell you – the week looked nothing like that!

My plan was thrown out the window!

Post Workout - Wednesday August 27, 2014
I took this after my workout on Wednesday — I needed to do it, for myself.

Sure Monday was P90X3 Accelerator. That was easy to stick to, because I had completed the workout before I published the post (haha!) But Tuesday, I had absolutely no desire to grab the barbell and do the workout. I like Pump & Burn but after a long day with the kids, did not want to do it. I tried to convince myself, I went so far as putting on my workout clothes, but I just couldn’t motivate myself to do it. So, Tuesday ended up being a rest day.

Wednesday arrived and I contemplated picking back up with Pump & Burn or even doing Triometrics as was on my plan. I ended up doing Focus T25 Beta Rip’T Circuit with Sam. Sometimes it’s just easier for us to get our workouts done together – easier on time, easier on the kids 🙂

Thursday I finally had the desire to pull out the barbell and did Les Mills Pump, Pump & Burn. I think I should have done one of the longer Les Mills Pump workouts though.

Friday was scheduled to be P90X3 Yoga, but since I had taken Tuesday off, I moved things around and did P90X3 Triometrics instead. It was on the plan for the week, and I knew I’d be happy to accomplish it.

Saturday, I once again skipped out on Les Mills Pump, opting instead to do the XBox One Russell Wilson workouts. That pair back to back is dynamite — really great workout and highly enjoyable!

Sunday – I actually did what I had planned: A Focus T25 workout. We did Gamma Speed 3.0.

So, how did I really do on my plan?

I did 5 of the planned workouts, one unplanned workout and took a rest day.

Not shabby at all – felt like I had really fallen off the schedule, but somehow by the end of the week, I had recovered nicely.

If I had not created that workout plan, I’m not sure how successful this past week would have been. I just didn’t have it in me to workout that much. It was far easier to have a plan and tweak it rather than try to come up with something each day when the body wasn’t up for it.

Transitioning into September

I have the desire to go running. I haven’t been successful at it in quite a while — really ever since my injury during the Sea Wheeze 1/2 marathon in 2012. But I really want to run. So, I’m going to be adding a bit of running into the workout schedule this month (starting today!!)

I’m scheduling 6 workouts a week, with Friday being my rest day. So for this week here’s what I’ve got planned:

  • Monday: Run
  • Tuesday: P90X3 Yoga (I’m craving this workout)
  • Wednesday: Focus T25 with Sam
  • Thursday: Les Mills Pump, Pump & Shred
  • Friday: Rest
  • Saturday: Run
  • Sunday: Les Mills Pump, Pump & Burn

The kids are heading back to school this week, but after school activities don’t start for another week, so gradual re-entry for us all!

Happy September, and please check in in the comments below and let me know your plans for this month!
